How to stop smoking.

I personally believe you have to really want to give up smoking to actually succeed. You need to come to the point in your life where you are ready and happy to give up the dirty habit that is slowly filling your lungs with gunge.

I gave up smoking on 22nd December 2000 and haven't had a cigarette since. I didn't use patches or nicoteen replacement gum, although I did replace smoking with a normal chewing gum habit which took me two years to quit!

I also subscribed to some stop smoking newsgroups and found the comradeship of the newsgroup very helpful.

Reward yourself - either put the money aside in a jar or bank account (It'll really add up quickly if you're strict about it) and spend this money on yourself at regular intervals.

Before you stop...

Don't be afraid to ask for help - the above newsgroup is a fantastic place.
Ask family and friends not to smoke around you - if your partner smokes ask them to smoke outside or at least open an extra window.
Wash your clothes and curtains to get rid of the smell of smoke.

Write down the reasons you want to become a non-smoker. Some people find this very helpful

Don't beat yourself up if you fail - just start again - straight away! Bin those cigs and lighters and ashtrays!

Stay out of places you used to enjoy cigarettes. Go to the cinema and other places you're not allowed to smoke in! Always pick the no smoking area in restuarants.

Get your kids to shout at you if they catch you smoking!

Have a shower if the craving is too strong! You can't smoke in the shower!! Or visit the swimming pool!

Keep your hands busy. You'll find yourself reaching for the cigs so put something there instead.

Be prepared to being miserable and unhappy and really wanting a cig. Accept the fact you're withdrawing from a horrificly addictive drug and accept you'll feel bad! You'll only feel terrible for a few days - and once you're over the initial reaction to stopping poisoning your body you'll only have the mental aspect to deal with - and you can do this by working really hard on wanting to give up and making arrangements to help yourself.

If you need to hold something in your hand then get a pencil. Keep yourself busy!

Good luck and get the support of those around you - and give yourself some real incentives to quit. You'll feel better and know you're doing the right thing.
